The Goods and Services Tax /Harmonized Sales Tax Credit is a tax-free credit introduced by the government of Canada to support the low and moderate income families. The payment is usually made in January, April, July and October (once in three months). The GST/HST Credit aims at providing relaxation in the Goods and Services Tax.

Eligibility Criteria
- Residential Status: A candidate must be living in Canada.
- Income Tax Return: Applicants must submit their last year’s income tax return. The CRA uses the information from the income tax return for checking the eligibility.
- Income Limit: Applicants must meet the income criteria set by the CRA to qualify the credit.
- Age Limit: To appeal for the credit, a candidate must not be less than 19 years.
- Age Relaxation: If someone is less than 19 years old but has a spouse, common-law partner or is responsible for a child. Such people can also qualify the credit.
Payment Dates
The GST/HST Credit aims to assist the low-income families by providing a relaxation in the Goods and services tax. The payment is made every three months, usually on the 5th day of the month. To avoid any delay in the credit, fill accurate details during the tax return.

Payment Amount
If your income increases, your GST/HST credit decreases.
- If the net income of a single individual is $35,000, then they will receive $496 monthly.
- If the net income of a couple is $35,000, then they will receive $650 monthly.
- If a claimant is less than 18 years, they receive $171 monthly, regardless of income.
- If the net income of a single individual is $36,000, they receive $630 monthly.
- At $37,000 a single individual will receive $456, on the other hand couples will receive $610.
How to appeal for the GST/HST Credit?
- To appeal for the GST/HST credit, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will get the eligible candidates enrolled for the credit after checking the income and family information.
- Candidates must file the tax return of 2023.
- People who are new residents of Canada must fill in “FORM RC151”. It is a GST/HST Credit Application.
- People must submit the form to CRA.
